The Long War is a modification of John Tiller's Squad Battles: Soviet-Afghan War game. It gives you the opportunity to recreate the current war on terrorism - referred to by the Bush Administration as the Long War - in Afghanistan. The mod also allows you to carry the war across the border into Pakistan to simulate a hypothetical conflict with the West's current ally. Adding a conventional opponent adds a new twist to the gameplay and can make engagements far more deadly for both sides. Reflecting their fight against terrorism, Pakistan can also be played as an ally as they battle with insurgents within their borders.

The current version of the mod contains units representing the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, Germany, France, Denmark, the Afghan National Army/Police, the Taliban/Al-Qaeda and Pakistan. In most cases they have unique weapons, ground and air transport vehicles giving each nation the tools they need to fight and win. Several US and UK aircraft are available to call on for support, and are able to deliver various bomb, cannon and missile loads. The aircraft include the A-10, the F-15, the C-130U and the Predator B, to name a few. Included in the mod are several 'showcase' scenarios. These are mostly simple missions designed to show off the mod's potential and do not represent actual engagements. That's not to say they're not challenging, however! In the future more scenarios will become available for seperate download or as part of a future release of the mod.
