This information is provided for RedBaron II/3D gamers who would like to change or replace British squadrons. I took August 8, 1918 as my reference point and listed all RFC/RNAS units that had come into Western Front service by that time. I did not go past August as from this point on the Allied advances meant that British squadrons began to operate from bases formerly occupied by the Germans, an impossibility in RedBaron given the fixed position of the lines. This cutoff excludes a number of units which only served for a brief time, and thus made relatively small contributions to the air war.
Aircraft are listed by their usual RFC/RAF terminology, as used by the Official History. Most are clear but the term 'Nieuport Scout' covers all three of the main single seat Nieuports, the Nie. 11, Nie. 17 and Nie. 24; in general, the Nie. 11 was phased out by early 1917, the Nie 17 by late 1917 and the Nie 24 (and almost identical Nie.27), introduced in spring 1917, was used to a small extent, alongside the Nie 17. The Nieuport 2-seater used by 46 Squadron was the Nieuport 12. "Sopwith 2-seater" (the official RFC name for the 1½-Strutter) actually includes the single seat Type 9700 long-range bomber as well as the two-seat Type 9400 reconnaissance fighter. The RNAS used both types (referring to the Type 9400 as the Sopwith Fighter and the Type 9700 as the Sopwith Bomber), but the RFC used only the two-seat version. I have not specified subvariants of the BE 2, FE 2 or SE 5, just out of sheer indifference. The AW is the Armstrong-Whitworth FK 8 reconnaissance 2-seater. 'Martinsyde' was the Martinside G100 'Elephant' single-seat scout/bomber.
The names and locations of bases are well-covered by RB II/3D, but not exhaustively. Where the airfield does not exist in the game, I have suggested (in quotes in parentheses) a nearby base from RB which will at least ensure that squadron operates in the right general area. A proviso here is that the maps in RB are not completely accurate; places have been moved and areas of France 'condensed' to fit the historical landscape into the game landscape.
All RNAS squadrons added 200 to their number on the formation of the RAF on 1 April 1918. 6 RNAS is anomalous in that it was initially a scout unit that was disbanded at the end of November, 1917. It reformed in 1918 as a bomber unit. I don't have complete info for the RNAS and would welcome any updates for the period 1916-early 1917 and winter 1917-1918.
This file is
available as a WordDoc and text format. The data covers the top speeds and
climb rates for most aircraft that appear in RB3D. All the scouts are accounted
for the references for the data is contained in the files.
Mark Hutchinson
supplied these pictures which name each aerodrome. The originals are available
from Sygrods RB3D
Technical Information Site, Mark has added the aerodrome names to them.
These images are for reference and are available for viewing individually
as jpg's ( approx 250 to 300 Kb's each ) or can be downloaded as bmps in
a zip file.

This was the
data that was used for the Belgian parts of the UOP2.7aANZAC/BELGIAN patch
and for the Flanders Fields Patch. The data in these files was researched,
compiled and documented by Martin Soilleux Cardwell. It is thanx to Martin
that the Belgians appeared at all in RBII/RB3D.
This file is
available as an Excel Spreadsheet, WordDoc and in text format. The data
covers the victories obtained by the British Scout squadrons and divides
them by months at the front, percentage contribution by aces and percentage
contribution by aces scoring greater than 20 victories.
