Everyone seems to have his own ideas of what goes into making a good war game. Many of the commercial products have been very popular and are by and large excellent products. Still, wouldn't it be nice to change the rules a little? What about adding that custom tank with the camouflage paint job? XWG is my attempt to make it easy for game players and scenario designers to exercise a large amount of control over game play. My overall intention is to write a war game engine with most of the input contained in easily edited text files. More complex parts of the program, for example combat resolution, will be placed in DLL's (or handled via OLE) to encourage easy customization. This is a large project and I don't know if it will ever get to even a semi-finished state.
I have started on the first module of XWG, the map making utility, XWG Map. At this stage it is not complete, but it has many editing functions which make map generation quite rapid. One function that is implemented (and this has nothing to do with XWG) is a Panzer General 2 and People's General map making capability. I may add a similar export function for Panzer General 1. This is a WIN95 program. Although not strictly required to use the program, you will get off to a much faster start if you have a copy of the map tile file tacmap.shp from Panzer General 1 (demo contains the needed file).
